Organizational and Human Resource

Within this competency, I have been able to focus on building excellent terms, relying on the strengths of others to come together in a sense of collaboration.  Moving through selection to advising and motivating members of several committees have allowed me to focus on my relational advising style.

While serving in my internship site, I was able to head a committee whose primary responsibility was to allocate storage and office spaces to student organizations.  I was able to create the learning outcomes of participation in the committee as well as select the members of the committee that were committed to those learning outcomes.  After the committee was selected, I facilitated a discussion about what the committee’s responsibilities were and, through the allocation meetings, the committee walked through effective team communication skills in talking through the allocation process.  Looking at the intermediate outcome of “develop appropriate alliances with others as a means to efficiently and effectively complete work assignments; recognize how the formation of alliances can either enhance or detach from one’s professional credibility or the use of teams” (ACPA & NASPA 2015, p. 25), I was able to develop my skills regarding how to create effective teams as well as work towards the best interests of the committee that I was the chair to.

Another activity that I was able to develop my competency of Organizational and Human Resources is the work I have been doing with the selection process of the Homecoming Student Steering Committee.  Working with my direct supervisor, I worked to create position outcomes for the directors and assistant director positions.  From these outcomes, I created intentional interview questions that allowed my supervisor and myself to find candidates that best fit the organization’s needs and outcomes.  This act has showcased my commitment to the intermediate outcome of “implement strategies, interview protocols and decisions regarding staff selection that adheres to institutional policy and meets organizational goals” (ACPA & NASPA 2015, p. 25).  I have worked towards being able to assess the needs of an organization in order to create the most effective team available.
